How to Check Where Your Site Stands in ChatGPT, Perplexity & AI Overviews

Buyers increasingly ask AI assistants for recommendations instead of scrolling Google results. The question every site owner should be asking: when someone asks AI about my category, does it cite me — or my competitors? Here's how to check, free methods first.

Shortcut: our free AI Visibility Prompt Generator builds this exact 20-prompt panel for your brand automatically — no manual writing needed.

The 3 Places to Check

"AI visibility" isn't one thing. Your brand can appear (or be absent) in three different AI surfaces, and each needs a slightly different checking method:

SurfaceHow answers workEasiest way to check manually
ChatGPTConversational answers; cites web sources when browsing/search is enabledAsk buying-intent questions in a fresh session; note citations
PerplexityEvery answer lists numbered sources explicitlyAsk questions; the source list makes citations easy to audit
Google AI OverviewsAI summary atop Google results, with linked sourcesGoogle your category queries; check whether your pages are among the linked sources
Start with Perplexity. Because it numbers every source, it's the fastest surface to audit by hand — you can see in seconds whether your domain appears in the citation list.

Free Methods First: The Prompt-Panel Technique

Before spending on any tool, run this manual check. It takes 15–30 minutes and answers the core question directly.

Step 1: Build your prompt panel (10–20 variations)

Write the questions your buyers actually ask — not branded queries about you, but category questions where a recommendation could go to anyone:

Aim for 10–20 variations covering informational ("how do I…"), comparison ("X vs Y"), and transactional ("best … for …") intents.

Step 2: Run them clean

Use a fresh/incognito session where possible to reduce personalization. Ask each prompt once in ChatGPT, once in Perplexity, and Google the equivalent query for AI Overviews. Do not cherry-pick — run the whole panel the same way every time.

Step 3: Score every answer the same way

For each prompt × each surface, record one of four outcomes:

  1. Recommended — the AI actively suggests your product. (This is the money outcome.)
  2. Cited — your page is linked/referenced as a source.
  3. Mentioned — your brand name appears but isn't endorsed or linked.
  4. Absent — neither you nor your URL appears.

Log it in a spreadsheet with the date. One check means little — AI answers vary day to day. Four weekly checks reveal the trend.

What Google Search Console can't tell you: GSC reports impressions and clicks but does not break out AI Overviews as a separate search appearance. If your impressions rise, you can't tell from GSC alone whether AI Overviews drove it. The manual method above fills that blind spot.

When a Paid Tool Is Worth It

The manual method stops scaling at around 30–50 prompts, or when you need daily data and competitor comparisons. That's when a tracker earns its keep. The decision rule is simple:

For a full price comparison of free and cheap options, see our 7 free and affordable AI visibility tools compared. Whatever you choose, verify it first: run 10 prompts manually, then compare against the trial — if the numbers roughly match, the methodology is sound.

How to Read the Results: Citation ≠ Mention ≠ Recommendation

This distinction is where most people misread their data:

Being named in passing while the AI recommends three competitors is not a win. When you score your prompt panel, weight recommendations 10× higher than mentions. If competitors are recommended where you're merely mentioned, that's your gap to close — usually with better comparison content and third-party citations, not more blog posts.

A Simple 15-Minute Weekly Routine

  1. Run your prompt panel (10–20 prompts) across ChatGPT, Perplexity, and Google — same prompts, same order, weekly. (10 min)
  2. Score and log each result as recommended / cited / mentioned / absent, with the date. (3 min)
  3. Note changes: which prompts flipped vs. last week? New competitor appearing? You disappearing somewhere you were cited? (2 min)
  4. Monthly: tally the 4-week trend per prompt. Only act on patterns across 3+ weeks — single-week flips are usually noise.

Do this for a month before buying any tool. You'll either find you don't need one — or you'll know exactly which features to pay for.

Frequently Asked Questions

How do I check if my website appears in ChatGPT answers?

Ask ChatGPT your buyers' actual questions (10–20 variations) in a fresh session and record whether your brand is cited, mentioned, recommended, or absent in each answer. Repeat weekly and track trends.

Can Google Search Console show AI Overviews data?

Not separately. GSC reports overall impressions and clicks without breaking out AI Overviews, so manual checking is currently the only way to attribute visibility specifically to AI Overviews.

How often should I check?

Weekly. AI answers are noisy — the same prompt can cite different sources on different days — so look at 4-week trends, not single checks.

Citation vs. mention — what's the difference?

A citation links your page as a source; a mention just names your brand; a recommendation actively endorses you. Recommendations drive business; mentions mostly don't.

Do I need a paid tool?

Not initially. The manual panel method is free and sufficient under ~30 prompts. Pay when you need daily data, 50+ prompts, or automated competitor analysis.
